The Summer Theater Festival will return to its lakefront home on June 19
The 快播视频 today announced the schedule for the 66th season of Theater on the Lake: The Chicago Summer Theater Festival. In keeping with Theater on the Lake鈥檚 tradition of producing plays lakeside, the Summer Festival will return to Theater on the Lake鈥檚 Fullerton Street building, located at 2401 N. Lake Shore Drive, for the first time since 2013.
This summer, two neighborhood parks will also host the off-the Loop theater festival: South Shore Cultural Center and Hamlin Park. The season will run June 19 through August 31. Performances will be held Tuesday through Friday at 7 p.m. and Thursdays at 2 p.m.

Playwright Isaac Gomez is also returning as this season鈥檚 artistic curator. After a successful 2017 Theater on the Lake run, the Chicago-based dramatist originally from El Paso, Texas/Ciudad Ju谩rez, Mexico, will once again contribute his theatrical insights to make this inaugural year memorable for theatergoers.
鈥淚n this one year, art was front and center in Chicago鈥檚 beloved storefront theater community,鈥 said Artistic Curator Isaac Gomez. 鈥淚t is somewhere amidst reflection of our past to gain a better understanding of where we are now and, perhaps more importantly, where we can go, that the inaugural season of Theater on the Lake in its return to the Lakefront lives.鈥
Each year, the artistic curator has the opportunity to select productions they feel exemplify the best and most relevant of Chicago鈥檚 rich theater community. Curators present these works to the Theater on the Lake audience with the intention engaging an active discussion around their choices. This year, in addition to curating Theater on the Lake鈥檚 season, Gomez鈥榮 prolific contributions to the theater community are currently spread across the city. His play, Ofrenda, written in collaboration with 快播视频 company in Residence, The Albany Park Theater Project, is currently running at Eugene Field Park. In addition, we can look forward to the world premiere of his play La Ruta at Steppenwolf Theater Company this fall.
This year will also feature the first-ever play commissioned by the 快播视频 in collaboration with the Chicago Dramatists organization Felons and Familias. Sandra Delgado, the actress and playwright, will return to her childhood park to present her workshop production at Hamlin Park.

In 2017, Theater on the Lake launched its New Play Commission titled Theater on the Lake: In the Works. The initiative was devised to support the development of a new theatrical work by a Chicago playwright. Actress and playwright Sandra Delgado was chosen to develop Felons and Familias, a new work in conjunction with resources from the 快播视频 and with the support of Chicago Dramatists.
The complete performance schedule can be accessed through the My Chi ParksTM mobile application, which is available to download on Apple and Android devices. Through this app, patrons can access to all 1,000+ Night Out in the Parks events on the go, helping them to plan a spontaneous night out.

Theater on the Lake: The Chicago Summer Theater Festival is presented as part of Mayor Emanuel's Night Out in the Parks, a series of cultural events and activities at parks across the city. It is also a key component of the Chicago Cultural Plan, which was launched by Mayor Emanuel and DCASE in 2012 and is making investments in public art, music festivals, films, concerts, exhibitions and performances.

Blood at the Root is a striking new drama based on the Jena Six; six Black students are charged with attempted murder for a school fight after being provoked with nooses hanging from a tree on campus. This bold play examines the miscarriage of justice, racial double standards, and the crises in relations between men and women of all classes-resulting into the shattering state of Black family life.

A play for two clowns, this Danish play finds the Nazi propagandist Dr. Joseph Goebbels and filmmaker Leni Riefenstahl doomed to an afterlife in which they are forced to confront their pasts. Locked deep down inside the present day F眉hrerbunker, the two find themselves engaging in denial, manipulation, and pure slapstick. It鈥檚 a reminder of the consequences of selling lies as truth and propaganda as art. Did we mention it鈥檚 a play for two clowns?

The play dissects race, xenophobia, ego, and our moral compass 鈥 topics some might say are more relevant now than when it premiered eight years ago.

Insurrection deals with racial identity and sexuality, as Ron faces his ancestors鈥 history and his own identity. A wrenching story, Insurrection: Holding History will change how you see the past-and just maybe yourself as well.

Isaac Gomez is a Chicago-based playwright currently under commission from South Coast Repertory, the Goodman Theatre, Actors Theatre of Louisville (Acting Apprentice New Play Commission), The Theatre School at DePaul University (Cunningham Commission for Youth Theater), Sideshow Theater Company, Steep Theatre, Albany Park Theater Project, and StepUp Chicago Playwrights. His plays have been supported by Steppenwolf Theater Company, Primary Stages, Oregon Shakespeare Festival, Goodman Theatre, Victory Gardens Theater, Northlight Theatre, Albany Park Theater Project, WaterTower Theater, Haven Theater, Teatro Vista, Greenhouse Theater Center, Jackalope Theater Company, Pivot Arts, Definition Theater Company, Broken Nose Theater, Stage Left, The VORTEX, and Something Marvelous. About Theater on the Lake
Constructed in 1920, the Theater on the Lake building was originally a recuperation ward for babies suffering from tuberculosis and other diseases. During World War II, the structure was then used as a 快播视频O Center. After the war, the 快播视频 used the lakefront venue for then-popular barn dances. In 1952, it was converted into the Theater on the Lake performance venue and showcased productions staged by the 快播视频鈥檚 many community theater organizations. In 1996, the programming evolved into its current format, and the 快播视频 began inviting professional theater companies to remount their best works.
The Joseph Jefferson Awards Committee honored Theater on the Lake with the 2011-12 Special Award for developing new audiences of non-equity theaters and artists, and in celebration of 60 years dedicated to expanding theater opportunities throughout the Chicago community.
In 2017, Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the 快播视频 reopened the Theater on the Lake (TOTL) building as a year-round production and event space. The historic building has been transformed from a summer programming site to a year-round performance and special events venue. TOTL is a 19,000 square foot lakefront venue that now includes a performance area for theater and music, a restaurant, two private event spaces and an outdoor patio.
