Description
Uniquely situated on the former site of Stearns Quarry, the 26-acre Palmisano Park contains a variety of prairie, wetland, and aquatic habitats. The innovatively designed tiered wetland along the north edge of the natural area feeds a quarry-basin-turned-pond. Over 1.5 miles of paths – including recycled timber boardwalks, paved pathways, a crushed stone running path, elevated metal walkways, and flagstone steps.
The pond is accessible via both a metal boardwalk and steps. Many visitors enjoy fishing in the pond and it is great for birding too, as black-crowned night herons often make an appearance.
Scenic overlooks provide dramatic views of the pond and boardwalks allow visitors to get close to native wetland flora. Native prairie plants dot the mound, which visitors can climb for spectacular views of the Chicago skyline.
In addition to maintenance conducted by the park district, Palmisano Park Natural Area benefits from the dedication and hard work of volunteers who collect and scatter native seed, plant native species, pick up trash, monitor vegetation and birds, and remove invasive species. Learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting our Community Stewardship Program page.
Help keep wildlife wild, safe, and healthy by following posted signage and Natural Areas Rules and Regulations. For questions regarding ¿ì²¥ÊÓƵ Natural Areas, email nature@chicagoparkdistrict.com.
