Description
All community gardens in Chicago parks are independently managed and financed by community members. This garden is managed by the Pottawattomie Park Community Garden group. The gardens are located in front of the field house on Rogers Avenue and along the perimeter of the field house, at the entrance to the dog park on the north end of the park, and at the entrance to the park near Jordan Community School along the path to the dog park.
The gardens have a substantial collection of native and native cultivar plants. There are roses, sunflowers, and thousands of spring bulbs in addition to lots of pollinator-friendly plants. There are plants with interesting textures and smells that folks can enjoy in addition to flowers and colors. There are also small berms and rock walls to add interest and structure.
The Pottawattamie Park Community Garden is not just an ornamental garden, but it is also a tool to foster community engagement. It has been instrumental in recruiting park advisory council members and the reliable presence of people gardening has impacted the community in and around the park positively.
