Description

The process of converting four acres of the south side of Rutherford Sayre Park from turf grass to native habitat began in 2019. This native planting provides food and shelter for pollinators like birds, butterflies, and bees, it is also helping to manage stormwater in an area of the park that often floods during heavy rainstorms. In the wettest sections, native wetland plants help soak up excess rainwater. Among trees that were already well established at the park, the surrounding areas have been seeded and planted with native prairie species.

In addition to maintenance conducted by the park district, Rutherford Sayre Natural Area benefits from the dedication and hard work of volunteers who collect and scatter native seed, plant native species, pick up trash, monitor vegetation and birds, and remove invasive species. Learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting our Community Stewardship Program page.
