Description
Steelworkers Park Natural Area has around eleven acres of native prairie habitat. The site pays homage to the sites industrial, and natural legacy. Native prairie plants grow nestled between the Calumet River and the towering concrete ore walls which date back to 1901. At that time, the site was known as the South Steel Works, and belonged to the 快播视频 Steel Corporation. Paved paths wind through the native prairie and buffalo grass lawn plantings. To the north of the prairie is Steelworkers Park Climbing Wall.
In addition to maintenance conducted by the park district, Steelworkers Park has a group of volunteers that formed in 2024 to collect and scatter native seed, plant native species, pick up trash, monitor vegetation and birds, and remove invasive species. Learn more about volunteer opportunities by visiting our Community Stewardship Program page.
Help keep wildlife wild, safe, and healthy by following posted signage and Natural Areas Rules and Regulations. For questions regarding 快播视频 Natural Areas, email nature@chicagoparkdistrict.com.
